Frequently Asked Questions

What lesson would suit me?

We are able to tailor your sessions to meet your individual needs. If you have never played polo before we suggest booking into a 2 hour introduction to polo session, this can either be done as a group booking or individually. The same goes for if you are coming back to polo after a break from playing.

Once you have had your first taste of polo or refreshed your skills, individual or group lessons both have their merit, and if we feel like you are ready to join club chukkas we can include a weekly 1:2:1 session into your training programme.

What experience do I need to be a member of the club?

Technically anyone of any ability is able to become a member of Oxford Polo Arena Club, however in order to play HPA tournaments, you will require membership of an HPA approved club. Membership also offers you free club chukkas as they are included with your membership as well as reduced tournament entry fees and pony hire.

For the U21 membership you also get automatically signed up for a Pony Club membership. We host and enter teams to various Pony Club matches and tournaments throughout the year. We also hold youth academy sessions and tournaments for our young players here at Oxford Polo. If you are interested in these please contact us and we will give you the details on how to sign up.

What do I need to wear to a polo lesson?

When starting lessons you can play in any shoe/ boot that has a heel. This helps to prevent your feet from slipping. If you are looking to play or have more lessons then we advise that you buy full length polo boots as these give you more protection. Similarly for helmets we have some that we lend out although having your own one is the best protection for you as it will fit better than a borrowed one. We are happy to recommend suppliers of rider equipment.

Clothing wise it is best to dress for the weather. If you are playing in an evening session we advise wearing layers as polo is physical and its better not to get too hot. Gloves often come in handy, although make sure they are not too thick. Please also wear full length trousers to avoid rubbing your skin.

Don’t forget, no question is too small. We are more than happy to help you no matter what the problem is.
